In late 2022, with support from nib Foundation, Butterfly invited all young people in Australia aged 12 to18 years to take part in the first annual Body Kind Youth Survey and to share their experiences and ideas around body image.
The survey was developed by leading body image researchers and educators, safely worded, ethics approved, and anonymous!
*More than 90% of young people reported some level of body image concern
*1 in 3 kids are either very or extremely concerned about their body image
*45% of young people are dissatisfied with how their body looks
*1 in 4 kids don’t feel respect for their body
*50% of kids rarely speak positively about their body.
*62% of young people wish they were thinner
*64% of kids wish they were more muscular
*50% of young people said their body image had stopped them from raising their hand in class
*Over a third of young people said their body image stopped them from doing a physical activity or sport
*Nearly 70% of young people have experienced appearance-related teasing.
Who better to guide us, than young people themselves?
