Share your story

The Butterfly Foundation is proud to offer Your Stories – a page for those who wish to share their lived experience of an eating disorder with others in the community.

Your Stories contains stories of people from all walks of life and although unique, provides an opportunity to connect to people with a similar experience, letting them know they are not alone.

At Butterfly, we are committed to embracing diversity and we welcome stories from all people irrespective of body shape, ethnicity, lifestyle choice, faith, sexual orientation and gender identity.

We acknowledge the courage it takes to share your stories with others and thank you for your willingness to do so.

“When we deny the story, it defines us. When we own the story, we can write a brave new ending” -Brené Brown.

Want to share your story?

By sharing your experience, you can help provide understanding, encouragement and hope to others. If you are interested in sharing your story with our online community, there are several steps involved:

1. Please read the Share Your Story – Butterfly Guidelines. Your story must adhere to these guidelines.

2. We need to be mindful of others reading your story and their safety. Please read the Mindframe Media Guidelines. These guidelines will help shape your story in a way that ensures the safety of our community.

3.Think about the message you with to share with others and how this may help them.

4. Suggested length: 200-500 words

Butterfly is here to create a safe environment for sharing. This page is not a live moderated forum, and stories will be uploaded after being reviewed.

*Please note we are currently experiencing a higher volume of stories being shared and will put up the approved stories as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience, and please connect with our Helpline should you want to chat through any thing you are experiencing.

  • You can enter Anonymous if you prefer
You will be contacted by Butterfly if opportunities arise and guided through a process for this.

Whether you are submitting a story for the Your Stories page, or reading those of others, it is important to look after yourself in the process.

If you feel distressed or would like some support after submitting or reading a story, we encourage you to reach out to the Butterfly National Helpline on 1800 ED HOPE (1800 33 4673), 8am and midnight (AEST), 7 days a week.
